GO-TO ITALIAN IN STOCKBRIDGE, EDINBURGH

We all have restaurants that we keep finding our way back to. As a student in Edinburgh, that place for me is Civerinos. So much so, that we now refer to it as "Civs." Its Hunter Square location has always been a classic, but it recently opened its doors in Stockbridge. When eating out is a rare occasion, you don't want to experiment and get disappointed. With Civerinos, you know exactly what you pay for, and it's not any gourmet Italian food: it's laid-back and casual dining. Paying for underwhelming food is something we have all been through, and the best thing about Civs is the MASSIVE portions and little prices (in this economy...) + they offer student discounts, so I have had meals there for as little as 7 quid! The ambiance is American diner style, and it's perfect for a casual outing with friends or family.

what's on the menu?

They have a pretty simple and easy-to-navigate menu that won't overwhelm you. Their drinks are pretty basic, with no cocktails.

PIZZA

They offer a variety of pizzas. Their New York style pizzas are thin crust, cheesy, and crispy slices. They offer some classics by slice as well, such as Margherita, which range from 4.5 to 6.5 pounds and are HUGE. This allows you to try more things on their menu, but if you are in the mood for a 14-inch or 20-inch, they range from 14-26 pounds. Apart from classics, they also offer flavors like confit garlic and bresaola. Their Detroit pizzas are also served by slice or pie, and they are deep dish, much heavier, and much cheesier. Honestly, I like a crispy slice, and a Detroit is too much for me. They have three flavors: Margherita, Wild Mushrooms, and Pepperoni. There are also special New Haven pizzas which I haven't tried yet, but they are supposed to be crispy and charred. Let us know what you think of them.

SIDES AND SALADS AND DESSERTS

They offer simple salads like Caesar, which go well as a side. I would say the star of the show is their dough knots, which are fried pizza dough with garlic oil, and they go very well with their truffle aioli. On the topic of truffles, truffle fries are difficult to get wrong, and that's another side that I order pretty frequently. Their gnocchi is crispy and just nice; however, I would reiterate that all this food is laid-back, nothing gourmet, and it definitely satiates my cravings: think of it like hangover food, or leftover takeout that makes you really excited when you weren't expecting it. For dessert, personally, I like their tiramisu or affogato.

We'd definitely recommend Civerinos for casual Italian-American-style dining. It's definitely one of our best spots in the city, and we give it 4 out of 5 stars! Let us know what you think.
